Oscar History by Numbers

My cinematic palate isn’t particularly sophisticated. I’m a big comedy fan myself and the majority of movies I see in theaters are animated or unapologetically cheesy. But every once in a while I’ll get in the mood for something a little more artfully crafted and generally speaking, Oscar nominated films are going to deliver that.

The 2014 Academy Awards are fast approaching so obviously things are getting heated in the cinematic world. My twitter feed is blowing up with wild speculation via countless over-zealous twenty-somethings who consider themselves film connoisseurs. Jennifer Lawrence is excessively praised by all and everyone’s waiting anxiously to see if Leo finally gets his long-awaited award. It’s an exciting time in Hollywood and for movie lovers everywhere.

This infographic breaks down things like the ‘nominations to wins’ ratio for Best Pictures and how many female Best Directors there have been (spoiler alert: it’s one.) Other fun facts include that comparatively speaking, an absurd amount of people with the name ‘John’ have won Academy Awards, and only 12 movies over 3 hours long have won best picture, the longest being ‘Gone with the Wind.’ I’m excited to see what this year’s ceremony has in store and whether or not the winners will hold true to the trends in this piece.

I have a confession to make. I am a beatlemaniac. Urban Dictionary defines a beatlemaniac as “one who has an over the top or abnormal obsession and infatuation with the famous British rock group called the Beatles.” Yep, sounds about right. But, I’m not alone!

It all started when I was thirteen years old–a tall, gangly thing, with stringy hair and acne–my father took me with him to a local music store and picked up a copy of the newly released Beatles album, simply titled,1. It was a compilation album of almost every number-one Beatles single released from 1962 to 1970. It came out the year of Y2K, and was coincidentally purchased by my dad the year he got a new car with a CD player. When I pulled back the CD case’s plastic wrap, struggled to get off its side bar-code sticker, (seriously, that’s thing’s the worst–thank god for music downloading!) and popped the red and gold disk into the CD drive for the ride home, the fab four blew my mind…

Their music gave me this overwhelming feeling of happiness, which was hard to come by at that age, mixed with an overwhelming urge to pull out all my hair and melt into a puddle in the backseat of the car. They were simple, and complicated, and most importantly, British.

Thinking back, that experience was my first acceptance of pop music. I was an odd little girl, who would run out of rooms covering my ears whenever popular tunes of the early 2000s started playing (Britney Spears, N Sync, Spice Girls, take your pick). But, pop music of the 1960s? I could definitely dig a pony to the British Invasion.

If any of you are also suffering from an acute case of beatlemania, I think you might enjoy today’s infographic on Beatles albums over the years.

I think it’s fair to say that today’s society is obsessed with hair. Almost every magazine has a hair trend section chronicling the do’s and dont’s of all hair types. It’s great that magazines list such a variety of hair, because hair can be a great way to reflect your personality.

Feeling feisty? Go pixie short like Miley Cyrus. Or you can keep it natural like Solange Knowles. Point is, hair is an extension of your personality, so use it to your advantage. There is no excuse to not utilize the potential of your hair. The hair industry is a grand organization filled with products, hair dressers, and accessories. You would be surprised to learn of all the people that pay a pretty penny for that top-of-the-line hair product. However, with all the time and money that is spent on hair, have you ever stopped to wonder what else our hair is made of? Or if anyone else has the same hair routine as you do?

Luckily for you, today’s infographic lists some interesting facts about hair, including facts about: hair biology, hair color, and hair beauty routines. Perhaps, learning a little more about hair will help you better understand your own. It’s a step in the right direction for a good hair day, every day!

Well folks, it’s that time of year again. The time we all set aside our petty differences and quarrels and wonder where all these giant explosions and aliens/monsters are coming from: big-budget summer blockbuster season! The focus of these big summer action movies typically ranges anywhere from rogue cops to superheroes, but my personal favorite blockbuster genre usually includes some kind of giant thing fighting other giant things, and this year completely knocked it out of the park with Guillermo del Toro’s newest movie: Pacific Rim.

Pacific Rim basically boils down to humanity needing to build colossal, drivable robots (Jaegers) to fend off an onslaught of equally colossal monsters known as “Kaiju” that have surfaced in (you guessed it) the Pacific Rim. Today’s infographic takes a look at the history and evolution of giant movie monsters vs. giant movie robots and what has led us to the incarnations seen in Pacific Rim. The Kaiju that destroy and demolish cities in Pacific Rim have come a long way from their (relatively) humble ancestors such as King Kong and Godzilla, while the nuclear-powered Jaegers could definitely teach Voltron and the Iron Giant a thing or two about being a skyscraper-sized battle bot.

Look up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s…. a Superman infographic! Today’s graphic from Mashable gives us a look at the history of one of America’s oldest and most iconic superheroes: the Man of Steel himself, Superman. Anyone who is familiar with his character likely knows some of Superman’s backstory already; his origins on plant Krypton, his weakness to Kryptonite and his long-standing struggle with arch nemesis Lex Luthor are all well-known bits of knowledge in Superman lore. Possibly a lesser-known fact about the Clark Kent / Lex Luthor struggle is that it originally began when the two of them were teenagers in the same town.

Superman is very thoroughly established in our fiction and popular culture, so it should be no surprise that he’s set to show up on the big screen again next month in “Man of Steel.” After Superman’s initial comic book success, the character really took off and began to branch out into mediums like TV shows (both animated and non-animated) and an entire series of films.

Everyone who watches TV regularly probably has one or two favorite shows that they think were canceled before their time. Some shows only last a few short seasons before they’re promptly forgotten, while others eventually make a comeback (Family Guy and Arrested Development were both canceled before being revived by popular demand). Some shows, though, are unfortunate enough to only make it through their first season, if that.

Today’s graphic from wetpaint.com gives us a look into the world of single-season shows, from which networks are most likely to cancel a new program after or during its first season to which actors (and even producers) are more likely to be part of a one-season show. FOX, for instance, has the highest rate of shows discontinued after only one season at 46%, with The CW coming in second place at 35%. Out of the prospective genres of TV shows, sitcoms and dramas meet the axe most frequently on their first season, with comedies and sci-fi and fantasy shows next.

The creative process would not have begun had people not had an intrinsic desire to communicate with one another. Over time we have discovered and invented new ways to relay information to increasingly larger groups of people. By inventing printing and computing methods we have increased the need for creative workers in virtually every field. Without the creative side of organizations, the first Macintosh would not have been introduced, brand management would not be possible, and communication through beautiful imagery would cease to exist.

The BOSS Group is an award-wining creative staffing firm for interactive, creative and marketing talent. They’ve been supplying temporary, temp-to-hire, direct hire, and managed services solutions to leading organizations across virtually every industry sector for 25 years. Check out the evolution of creative, and wish them a happy birthday!
